What are NS records (Nameservers) and why do I need to change them?

NS Records are the list of records (two records generally) applied for a domain name in domain settings on domain registrar side.

Nameservers shows to the Internet were to find the DNS server for a certain domain. DNS server is a server where you need to make changes on DNS records like TXT, CNAME and MX mail records to be applied for your domain. For example, if you set AliDropship NS records for your domain, then you need to change DNS records for a domain from AliDropship cPanel Zone Editor. If your domain has GoDaddy NS records, then you need to make these changes on GoDaddy personal account.

When changing NS records for a domain, an IP address for a domain will be changed automatically. An IP address shows the Internet where to find site files associated with this domain name. IP address is always written on an A record in DNS settings. An A record contains an IP address associated with NS records by default, but you may manually change it. This process is called “to point a domain to another server”. If you haven’t changed domain setting after domain purchase, it points to domain registrar server.

That is why if you’ve purchased domain name from one company and would like to host a site with another company, you need to change NS records or an A record for a domain in domain registrar account.

AliDropship company asks to change NS records (not an A record) when pointing domain to AliDropship server.

Please note! It can take up to 48 hours for your new name servers to take effect everywhere. You may check NS records and an A record for your domain with online checkers like dnschecker.org or www.whatsmydns.net.

Sometimes there could be an issue with changing domain NS records to Alidropship ones, because Alidropship NS records has identical IP addresses. For example, *.de domains do not support NS records with identical IP addresses. In this case we recommend delegatating a domain name to AliDropship server by IP address. To do that it is necessary to keep default NS records for a domain and change only A record in DNS settings by adding IP of AliDropship hosting provided in the purchase email.

I changed NS records to AliDropship ones for my domain, but my site does not work.

After delegation, your domain name should be attached to your cPanel. You may do this by following this instruction: https://help.alidropship.com/hosting/managing-hosting-through-cpanel/adding-new-domain-in-cpanel

Also you need to install Wordpress for a new site with your domain name with the following instruction: https://help.alidropship.com/installation/installing-wordpress

After this your site becomes online and you will be able to set up your dropshipping store.
